Alternatives to the Use of Deadly Force |
Alternatives to the use of deadly force based on the subject’s behavior. 1. Explain
and discuss the force continuum as it relates to alternatives to
deadly force. Explain where less than lethal devices are situated in
the force continuum.

Handgun Training and Qualification (Use of the Colorado Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) course is only for convenience and compatibility with local, county, and state law enforcement agencies) |
Students
are instructed in the: 2. Basic marksmanship 3. Four safety rules directed by Colorado POST 4. Use of cover and tactics Training culminates in the student demonstrating safe weapons handling techniques and successfully qualifying with their duty handgun on the handgun course of fire.

Shotgun Training and Familiarization |
Students are instructed in the: 1. Safe use and handling of pump action shotguns 2. Cruiser Safe and Cruiser Ready conditions 3. Use of cover and tactics Training culminates in the student demonstrating safe weapons handling techniques and successfully firing the 12 gauge pump action shotgun with 00 Buckshot and 1oz. lead slugs

Pressure Point Control Techniques (PPCT) |
PPCT can help minimize risk to officers and subjects by reducing resistance to apprehension in a non-lethal manner using methods that when performed correctly, do not cause permanent injury. The student will demonstrate proficiency in PPCT holds and compliance techniques.

Searching and PPCT Handcuffing Techniques |
1. The student will demonstrate proficiency in systematic searching to include: a. Considerations when approaching a suspect and conducting a visual search. b. Describe and complete a systematic search, starting with high risk areas. c. Demonstrate an understanding of common areas on a suspect’s body where weapons and contraband can be concealed. 2. The student will demonstrate proficiency in controlled handcuffing procedures to include: a. Students will be able to explain the appropriate legal justifications for handcuffing a subject. b. Students will demonstrate an understanding of tactical considerations for handcuffing. c. The student will be able to demonstrate proper handcuffing techniques to include compliant handcuffing to controlling resistive behavior during handcuffing. d. Students will be able to identify the risk of injury to a subject from handcuffing. e. Students will have an understanding of proper handcuff selection and maintenance.

OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) Pepper Spray Deployment Tactics and Post Deployment Treatment |
Students are taught the proper techniques for OC agent deployment as a less than lethal force alternative along with post deployment treatment for both officers and subjects. Students are taught the Scoville Heat Units (SHU) measurement and the effects of OC agents on the body. Class culminates in each student being exposed to OC Pepper Spray by instructor delivered deployment.

Impact Instruments (Tactical Collapsible Baton) |
1. The student will explain and demonstrate the use of impact instruments. 2. The student will demonstrate minimum proficiency in the appropriate use of an impact instrument. 3. Students will understand the legal justifications for the use of impact weapons. Class culminates in each student demonstrating the proper use of the Tactical Collapsible Baton in a training environment.

Traffic Control |
Student will: 1. Explain and demonstrate reasons for the implementation of hand signal traffic control. 2. Demonstrate minimum proficiency in effective hand and arm signals for traffic control. 3. Understand the legal aspects of traffic control. Class culminates in each student demonstrating proper hand and arm signals for traffic control.

Student will: 1. Explain and demonstrate the use of the handheld two-way radio.
